Montessori Education
Dr. Maria Montessori was Italy's first female physician. Her acute observation skills and love of children led her to develop an educational method that focuses on a multi-sensory, holistic approach to learning. The child is presented with a prepared learning environment which encourages exploration and hands on learning. The main role of the Montessori teacher is to act as an observer and a guide to the child's learning. The Montessori Method addresses the entire child through cognitive, physical and spiritual lessons. The first children to benefit from this method were special needs children who were institutionalized in Italian hospitals at the end of the 19th century. It was shown that "normal" children could also benefit from this method. Dr. Montessori opened the first Casa le Bambia in Rome, Italy in 1903. Almost one hundred years later, we are still teaching the original lessons designed by Dr. Montessori. Today, children in all parts of the world are engaged in this method of education. For me, the most rewarding years of my teaching career were spent teaching special needs children in a public Montessori school. Fara T. Faust NC/CMTE 2000
